We would like to thank everyone who has participated in programming over the past week here at Grand Central Art Center. It has provided another active schedule of diverse programming and wide range of visitors.

Last Thursday, Mat Gleason from Coagula (both the magazine and gallery) stopped by to see the exhibitions and chat a bit. We had the opportunity to talk about Tony de los Reyes, Constantin Hartenstein and Erin Morrison‘s work and the upcoming programming, before the conversation shifted to Angels baseball. Mat is one of the Angels number one fans, he actually pens for http://www.halosheaven.com/, but we won’t reveal his moniker, you’ll have to guess. The talk of baseball led to a great conversation about Adam Moser‘s residency/project this summer at GCAC, The Cut-Off Men. We honored Mat by presenting him with one of the team autographed, limited edition, baseballs from the project. Now if Mat would just stand still for one moment, we could get an in-focus picture…

Friday afternoon, artist in residence Brent Green and his collaborators, Mike McGinley, Jacquelyn Gordon, Tim Rutili, Tim Hurley and Jim Skuldt, met up at the Orange County School of the Arts, Margaret A. Webb Theatre. They spent much of the afternoon doing set-up and sound checks with the amazing OCSA team and volunteer students for that evenings screening with live soundtrack performance of Green’s feature film Gravity Was Everywhere Back Then. The venue is top notch and the sound quality was fantastic! After the sound check and a few warm-up runs, we headed down for a wonderful, pre-screening/performance, Mexican food dinner in downtown Santa Ana.

Following the early dinner, it was time to head back to the theatre for the performance. There was a great audience who experienced a performance that was truly emotional, reflective and inspiring. It was a very moving evening of live music soundtrack and powerful film. Thank you Brent and your collaborators for creating such powerful art! Our sincere gratitude to the team at the Orange County School for the Arts, especially Aaron Orullian, Patrick Williams, Eric Hamme, Kevin Cook, Cathy Michaels. The working week started of Monday with a visit from Orange County Museum of Art Chief Curator Dan Cameron. We invited Dan down to speak with students enrolled in the Exhibition and Design program at Cal State University Fullerton. Dan shared stories of how he began his career in the curating practice, his early travels to Spain that so inspired him, and his early writing on the topic of art. He talked about past projects, including his time at the New Museum, curating the 2003 Istanbul Biennale and the development of Prospect 1 in New Orleans. The students asked great questions and the conversation was lively. Thank you Dan for the time, energy and inspiration you provided to our students.

Monday evening, we partnered with OC Food Access Coalition, Positively Delicious OC and Memphis at the Santora to present a screening of the film In Organic We Trust. We had the great fortune to work with two wonderful individuals through this collaboration, OC Food Access Coalition Executive Director Gillian Poe and Program Coordinator Mire Molnar-Barton. We had an engaged crowd on hand that had the opportunity to talk with numerous organizations that set-up booths in our lobby, take in the tasty treats provided by Memphis, and enjoy the screening of the film. Following the film, the audience was provided the opportunity of a Q&A with the films Director/Producer Kip Pastor. It was an educational exchange that lasted close to an hour, with quality information provided by both the filmmaker and audience.

This afternoon, we were visited by Jose Quant and Shell Martin of the Q Art Salon, one of our great gallery neighbors here in Downtown Santa Ana. Jose and Shell brought Ruben Dario of Teatro Nacional Ruben Dario, Managua, Nicaragua, for a site visit to GCAC and conversation about cultural exchange possibilities. Lots of ideas and energy, so we will keep you posted as things develop.

Weekends are busy at Grand Central Art Center and we have plans to keep it that way!

This past Saturday, we began our new series of panel and gallery talks to kick-off the Santa Ana Art Walk evenings.  At 5pm, we presented CONVERSATIONS WITH MASTERS: PANEL 1, a series of panels that place current Cal State University Fullerton MFA students working on degrees is specific medium or practice, in conversation with individuals currently successful in that practice, as well as in conversation with individuals who play a role in decision-making within that practice.

The first of this series focused on the practice of painting.  CSUF MFA in Painting, Sara Dehghan, lead the conversation with fellow panelists artist Tony de los Reyes (current GCAC exhibiting artist of Border Theory), and Deb Klowden Mann, owner of Gallery/KM in Santa Monica.  They talked about the current gallery structures, how to and how not to approach galleries in terms of representation, the struggles of post graduation for an artist, and much more.  The speakers were insightful, knowledgable and extremely generous through the conversation, setting the bar extremely high as this series continues.  The next panel is scheduled for Nov. 3 and will focus on the practice of Public Art, an announcement will be coming soon.  Thank you to Sara for preparing such fantastic lead questions and engaged follow-ups.  Thank you Deb and Tony for your time and energy, we know the audience truly felt rewarded.

At 6pm, we followed the panel with a gallery talk by GCAC exhibiting artist Erin Morrison, whose current exhibition Meditative Action is on exhibition in our Education Gallery.  Erin toured patrons through the exhibition, talking about each work in the show and sharing her insights into process, theory and vision for the overall work.  She shared insight into her current status as an MFA candidate at UCLA, her influences from both life and the artistic field, the growth of her current work, and her thoughts as the work moves forward.  A very inspiring talk, so please join us in thanking Erin for this opportunity to engage the work so deeply.

At the conclusion of Erin’s talk, it was time for the Art Walk activities.  The community joined us for the evening and the opportunity to see the exhibitions by Tony de los Reyes, Erin Morrison and the video installation Event Horizon by Constantin Hartenstein.  Many were on hand to see the exhibitions after reading the excellent review of Border Theory in the current edition of the OC Weekly.  We are thankful to Gustavo Arellano for such a positive review.

Along with the openings, we were joined onsite by individuals who are working with us to build an even stronger and healthier arts community.  Rebecca Tuynman and her team from Ryman Arts were on hand with a Wishing Tree drawing activity.  Grand Central Art Center and the CSUF College of the Arts have been in dialogue with Ryman over the past few month in development of a greater project, for which we hope to announce in the coming weeks, so please keep posted.

Claremont Graduate University Arts Management student Alē McGrew was here working on her cap-stone project, a semester long engagement research project involving Grand Central Art Center.  Alē is working with GCAC towards a better understanding of our audience, answering basic questions like:  Who is GCAC’s audience?  How does GCAC monitor and understand our audience behavior?  How does GCAC engage and cultivate their audience?  How can GCAC work to better serve our audience?  To date, the insights she has provided has been invaluable.

Saturday evening also marked opening weekend for this semesters Grand Central Art Center Theatre season.  Managed and programmed by CSUF’s Department of Theatre and Dance, the 85 seat black box theatre presents an outstanding series of programs annually.  The season kicked-off with a sell-out audience to Ordinary Day’s.  The musical will continue to run through October 20, so purchase your tickets now and find out about upcoming Grand Central Art Center Theatre offerings on the Department of Theatre and Dance website: http://www.fullerton.edu/arts/gcac/theatre.html

On Sunday, Grand Central Art Center hosted a Farmers Market community forum, organized and moderated by Delilah Snell of The Road Less Traveled.  A very diverse group of individuals came together to discuss the topic, past farmers markets in Santa Ana, structures that might need to be put into place to organize such a market, community groups whose voice should be at the table and the overall desire to get a Farmers Market in the Santa Ana community as rapidly as possible.  It was clear, there was true knowledge, diverse perspective and passion in the room, and it was wonderful to have the opportunity to receive such wonderful insight.  By the end of the meeting it was clear –  if we can all work together to put past issues aside and unite in positive ways, we can collectively create something amazing – that is what we at GCAC would love to see most of all. Then we believe the next step would be, a well organized, well respected, serving everyone, Farmers Market!  Thank you Delilah for making this happen and thank you to everyone who attended and provided feedback.

And throughout the day Monday, the sounds of drumbeats, piano, violin and clarinet are booming from our GCAC Theatre space, as artist in residence Brent Green and his collaborator Mike McGinley of Bitter Tears, work to develop and record the soundtrack for Green’s next feature film.  It is joyous and ambitious energy drifting through our walls, and we are so truly grateful to have these two extremely talented individuals among us.

We Love Orange County School of the Arts!!!

Yes, we really LOVE this school!  The Orange County School of the Arts is our neighbor, located just down Sycamore Street from Grand Central Art Center.  If you don’t know this school, you should.  As stated in their own words “This premier public charter school currently serves more than 1,850 students in grades 7-12 from more than 120 cities throughout Southern California.”

Their students visit us all the time, through formal classes with their instructors, to groups of friends dropping over after school. Last week, a wonderful group of students came over after school and we provided them with a tour, and they entertained us with a little improvisational performance work.  Truly talented and inspired young individuals.

Earlier this week, OCSA teacher Randy Au brought two of his classes for tours and conversations.  GCAC Direct/Chief Curator John D. Spiak talked with the student about the work of artist Tony de los Reyes and theories of abstract painting.  They asked outstanding questions about the work, as well as questions about institutional decision making, artist selection and curatorial process.


Yesterday, Mr. Au brought another group of his students.  They spent time talking with our GCAC team member Yevgeniya Mikhailik, who also happens to be an amazing artist, about the work of artist Erin Morrison. Yevgeniva curated Erin’s exhibition and talked about her process, this body of work and her own role at GCAC.   They shared their thoughts and asked more questions.  It’s clear by their questions, these young artists are learning a dialogue and critical thinking that will lead to great success moving forward.


We consider ourselves extremely lucky to have such great neighbors!

Conversations with Masters are a series of panel discussion that will take place at GCAC.  Placing current CSUF MFA students working on degrees in specific medium, in conversation with individuals currently successful in that medium, in conversation with individuals who play a role in decision-making within that field.  For example:  MFA artist, in conversation with a successful artist in the field, in conversation with a gallery owner; MFA theatre student, in conversation with actor, in conversation with theatre director/TV show creator; exhibition/design student, in conversation with curator, in conversation with museum director.  Leading these conversations, the MFA students will direct the conversation, asking direct questions focused toward approaches for greater success and opportunities in the field as they near and complete graduation
 
6pm – ERIN MORRISON GALLERY TALK

Erin Morrison’s current exhibition, Meditative Action, is currently on exhibition at GCAC through October 14, 2012.  Morrison’s recent body of work is a culmination of paintings ranging from what some might consider surrealistic landscape to magic realism, with slight experimentation in minimalism. The intent of the work is to reach beyond the dictum of paintings history through the categorization of genre, and to explore the identifiable borders established by the institution of studio practice. They portray a sense of loss or misunderstanding, as well as a feeling of upheaval, revealing the displacement that comes with living a somewhat nomadic life.

With the season kicked off, we are now focused on our community, educational and outreach programming.  Many announcements will be made in the coming weeks, so keep posted as additional programs and events are confirmed.

The first day of the official new season started on the right note, with a day long visit to Grand Central Art Center, arranged by Joe Forkan, Associate Professor of Foundations and Drawing, for his California State University Fullerton MFA and BFA drawing and painting students.  Joe spent quality time with his students talking about the light qualities of Southern California, encouraging them to view the world in person instead of through a lens, and explaining how to create depth within a work of art.  He used his skill to demonstrate his thoughts on canvas, sharing with his student’s techniques that this skilled artist uses in his own outstanding work.  With this shared knowledge, the students dispersed across the Grand Central Art Center 2nd Street Promenade and began to create their own works, capturing elements of the downtown Santa Ana urban landscape.

It’s starting, the kick-off of our 2012-2013 season of exhibitions, programs and engagement at Grand Central Art Center.  With our new Director arriving last September 6, it has been a year in transition.  We have been busy the past 12-months developing a season that kicks-off September 1st from 7-10pm, with a free Season Opening Reception of three new and exciting exhibitions – Tony de los Reyes: Border Theory; Constantin Hartenstein: Event Horizon; and Erin Morrison: Meditative Action.

Actually, we kicked-off the season a little early, with a pre-season performance last Friday, August 24.  Through the generous support of swissnex San Francisco, the Swiss Arts Council Pro Helvetia, the City and Canton of Geneva, and a collaborative partnership with LACE (Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions), we presented Yann Marussich’s Bleu Remix, with sound performance by Steve Roden and Glenn Bach.  The evening provided a unique opportunity to experience this Swiss artists intriguing work.

“It is with great intention and little pretension that Yann Marussich chooses blue for his performance. In Bleu Remix, Marussich reclines motionless within his heated box, sometimes staring, sometimes with eyes closed, exuding blue. Steve Roden and Glenn Bach’s sound performance Friday night at the Grand Central Art Center was the aural partner to Marussich’s body. Roden and Bach’s sound activates us within the space of the gallery, moving with us around the clear box that contains the artist. But the sound, like the artist’s body, takes us to another place. I’m not sure where it is, but it’s an intense, yet deeply still dimension. I guess it’s a blue place…

After his 45-minute performance, I asked Yann if his choice of blue was linked to sadness or melancholy (lamentation was a feeling I couldn’t escape watching tears of blue roll from lids to cheeks to chest in two blue streams into the pool of his navel). “No sadness, only presence—just for you [his audience],” he replied with a smile that revealed pale blue teeth. Yann Marussich’s body in Bleu Remix is not the “blue skin of cold,”[1] but a hot blue offering of self and sweat and sincerity.”

The evening was capped off with a wonderful dinner at local eatery Memphis at the Santora, where the artist, his family and his team, the sound artists, swissnex San Francisco team, and individuals from LACE, joined us for conversation and talk of future collaborative opportunities.

As you will see from the 2012-2013 Exhibition / Program Schedule, this energy will continue throughout the upcoming year.  We have planned a quality and diverse season that will continue to provide inspiration and engagement for our communities – including CSUF students, faculty and staff; our Santa Ana community; and our contemporary arts communities locally, regionally, nationally and internationally.  We will be collaborating with a wide range of community partners, from the Santa Ana Public Library, the Grain Project, MKE<->LAX, Quinceañera Magazinebulbo (Tijuana/Los Angeles), OC Film Fiesta, among many others.

The Border Theory paintings combine two “orders” – abstract painting and the border that separates Mexico and the United States. Their relationship concerns components that are inherent in each: the demarcation of space through a conceptual framework, and its resulting material manifestation. Both systems rely on a combination of organic and inorganic materials and processes. The border itself can be addressed as site of politicized abstraction. It also utilizes specific materials and processes to organize otherwise incoherent space.  The Rio Grande, a geological, natural boundary that dominates the eastern portion of the border, turns abruptly into a geometric bifurcation on the western half of the border. This push and pull of “landscape” and “border,” which is inherent in topographical mapping, also happens to be the most significant occupation of abstract painting.  This solo exhibition will mark the premiere of de los Reyes new body of work.

Morrison’s recent body of work is a culmination of paintings ranging from what some might consider surrealistic landscape to magic realism, with slight experimentation in minimalism. The intent of the work is to reach beyond the dictum of paintings history through the categorization of genre, and to explore the identifiable borders established by the institution of studio practice. They portray a sense of loss or misunderstanding, as well as a feeling of upheaval, revealing the displacement that comes with living a somewhat nomadic life.

In his spectacle-installation Bleu Remix, Yann Marussich returns to a theme originally explored in Bleu Provisoire (2001), a spectacle in which a mysterious blue liquid oozes through the layers of his skin as though it were the final effect or by-product of his body’s inner processes. In Bleu Remix, the artist once more invites the viewer to experience an intimate journey through the corners of his body. Each time the spectacle is performed, a different (local) musician accompanies Marussich. This unique, singular confrontation establishes a new relationship between the sound and image. The meeting of the two artists brings an element of risk and uniqueness to the event, as if the music explores the spectacle repeatedly, resulting in new ways of perception. 
Marussich’s spectacle-installation at Grand Central Art Center will be accompanied by live sound performed by artists Steve Roden and Glenn Bach.

CSUF Students Ceramic and Glass Exhibition and Sale

This year’s annual ceramics and glass exhibition and sale focuses on the work of students from California State University, Fullerton.  The exhibition will be organized through the collaborative efforts of CSUF School of Art Associate Professor Nobuhito (Nobu) Nishigawara.

Sean C. Flaherty: An Overture in Parts
November 3, 2012 through January 14, 2013
Through a three act video installation, appropriating the soundtrack of the Broadway musical Les Misérables (based upon the 1862 French novel by author Victor Hugo), artist Sean C. Flaherty explores complex family and relationship dynamics.   The installation includes the video works: Act I, The Confrontation: Script as Set; Act II, One Day More: A Family in Parts; Act III, A Heart Full of Love: Familiar Parts.  Flaherty’s work allows the personal to become universal, providing seemingly intimate and private shared matters to be opened to critique.

Brent Green: To Many Men Strange Fates Are Given
December 1 through February 10, 2013
Brent Green is a self-taught artist and filmmaker who lives and works in a barn in Cressona, PA.  Known for his poetic works that address complex personal struggles, the artist will be in residence in the fall of 2012, creating a new multi-channel video installation for solo exhibition in the main gallery.  Green will conduct outreach programs with teens of the Santa Ana community, through animation and stop-motion filmmaking techniques, helping youth in the development of original content. His time at Grand Central Art Center will also include a screening (date TBA) with live soundtrack, performed by Brent Green and his selected musicians, of his past animation works.

Grand Central Art Center MFA Residents Exhibition
February 2 through April 21, 2013
The MFA Residents Exhibition will feature work by the artists currently residing at Grand Central Art Center.  The GCAC houses 28 residential apartments on its privately secured second floor, 26 of the apartments are dedicated living spaces for students of California State University Fullerton’s College of the Arts MFA program.  The Center also includes active studio space for each of the artists.

Monique Leyton and Brad Kuhl: Elite Deviance
March 2 through May 12, 2013
Kuhl & Leyton’s collaborative work explores the American and global culture of crime and its relationship to fame, media and the bizarre. The solo exhibition at Grand Central Art Center marks the US premiere of their new body of work, which focuses on the subject of white-collar crimes.  The artists draw inspiration from both obscure and popular subjects in the news, on the Internet and television.  Their primary medium is tape on paper.

Rochielle was first in residence at GCAC in spring 2012 and has been returning throughout the summer for pop in visits.  She is continuing to expand on the relationships she has built in the community and developing collaborative projects which include:  An oral histories project that deals with recording of stories of the survivors of violence, centered around a neighborhood known as the Townsend district in Santa Ana, through a collaboration with the Santa Ana Public Library Teen Space program “young historians” and Sharon Sekhon PhD, Professor, CSUF American Studies; Working on a proposal to develop a public work of art in the Logan Neighborhood through collaboration/conversations with the local organizations Santa Ana Public Library, United Artists of Santa Ana, El Centro, SACReD and The Grain Project; Organizing a teen summit and future GCAC teen council through relationships being built with Santa Ana Public Library, Santa Ana Boys and Girls Club, Bowers Museum, Project Access Warwick Center, Santa Ana High School and Orange County School for the Arts.

First visit will include a welcoming performance/city tour.  Upon immediate arrival, Papalia, who is visually impaired, will lead individuals on a walking tour of downtown Santa Ana. A full marching band will follow the artist and will begin to play music whenever the artist approaches a potential hazard.  The work is an attempt to create a heightened awareness of ones own community and surroundings.  Papalia will spend time developing a future project that will be realized through a future extended residency at GCAC.

Born in Milwaukee, Sarah is devoted to creating work that expands her knowledge of specific cities.  She’s worked with IN:SITE, a Milwaukee-based temporary public art organization, for three years.  She has been involved with public art projects including The Amplifier, a pop-up community center located in Milwaukee’s Silver City neighborhood, which was funded by the Wisconsin Arts Board.

This residency is in collaboration with the CSUF Begovich Gallery exhibition Interstice (November 10 – December 13, 2012), curated by CSUF Exhibition Design graduate students Cassandra Erb and Kimberly McKinnis, in association with MKE<–>LAX through the direction of Sara Daleiden.

Backpack Film School will engage the local youth community, allowing individuals to explore the histories, traditions and transitions of downtown and the surrounding neighborhoods. Through the expertise of the artists, the participating youth will develop skills and knowledge of filmmaking, working with the artists and community to create a series of visionary film projects. When completed, the films will be screened through a series of unique community film festivals in the exact neighborhoods in which the participating filmmakers live.  Each teen filmmaker will be responsible for deciding their location – apartment complex, driveway, school, public street and/or local parking lot – for their individual festival. The youth create the vision, invitation and serve as the director for their individual festival, responsible for introductions and remarks to open their festival. GCAC will provide all the projection, screen and sound equipment, as well as set-up and support needed for each festival. The artists and GCAC team will remain behind the scenes for each event, allowing the participating filmmaker to take the leadership role.

Quinceañeras is a residency exploring bodies in state of transition, from childhood into womanhood, based upon the artist’s own experience and memories of becoming a quinceañeras in Venezuela (one of the artist’s last significant experiences before migrating to the U.S). The artist plans to collaborate with 29 quinceañeras/wedding shops located in Downtown Santa Ana, Quinceañera Magazine, a downtown non-profit health care provider and individuals of the community – which will include girls and their families as they prepare for quinceañeras. Working together, they will examine the traditions behind rite of passage, family values and body image as perceived by these teenagers.

Bad at Sports is a Chicago-based artist collective that began as a solution to the problem of dwindling local arts coverage. The results so far have included: a weekly podcast/freely accessible audio archive of 380+ hours of artists and “art worlders” talking about their “art” and their “world;” several exhibitions and events; and a blog, that in 2000+ articles, has not only shed light on the regional art context, but offers an international reach and engagement. The project reflects the logic and generosity of the Internet – engaging, inviting and openly participating in the discussions that shape our culture.

MFA Conversations

Grand Central Art Center is developing a series of conversations that will take place at GCAC.  Placing CSUF MFA students working on degrees in specific medium, in conversation with individuals currently successful in that medium, in conversation with individuals who play a role in decision-making within that field.  For example:  MFA artist, in conversation with a successful artist in the field, in conversation with a gallery owner; or MFA theatre student, in conversation with actor, in conversation with theatre director/TV show creator; exhibition/design student, in conversation with curator, in conversation with museum director.  The MFA student, who can use the conversation to ask questions focused toward approaches for their greater success and opportunities in the field as they near and complete graduation, will lead these public programs.

This documentary follows Herlinda, an indigenous Purepecha potter, one of the few artisans in her community who uses alternative lead-free glazes, as she faces the difficult task of finding a market for her impressive pieces. The screening is presented in collaboration with bulbo (Tijuana/Los Angeles), OC Film Fiesta and The Yost Theatre.
