Video, Images and LA Times Review of Santa Ana Sites #5: Steve Roden

On the evening of Saturday, June 14th, GCAC presented the fifth performance in our Santa Ana Sites series, with a sound performance by artist Steve Roden.

The evening began with a reception at Downtown Santa Ana’s Q Art Salon, hosted by Jose Quant and Shell Martin. Guests gathered and connected with one another at this pre-event mixer.

At 8:15pm, GCAC Director/Chief Curator and Sites Co-Founder John D. Spiak led guests, downstairs, down the street the a historic law building and a parking lot in front of roll-up gate leading to an underground parking area. When all had arrived, the gate was opened and guests made their way underground, where they then entered another space – that of a subterranean racket ball court located beneath the law building owned by Dennis Dascanio, who generously allowed GCAC use of the space for the evening.

There, guests were greeted by Sites Co-Founder and Artistic Director Allen Moon and were introduced to Steve Roden for some brief pre-performance remarks.

GCAC invited Steve to perform in the Sites series, as we admired and respect him for the constant risks he takes – through his painting, installation work, films and sound performances. He is always challenging himself and the audience, allowing access to those slight moments in life that we often forget, or don’t allow ourselves to experience or enjoy – the slight mark, the capturing of an actual shadow, an adjustment or shift of a tone. It is what Steve does best and what makes him such a remarkable individual.

Over the course of his 5o-minutes performance, Steve didn’t disappoint, as he took the audience on a complicated sound journey – one that began with sound bleed from a cumbia band performing for a wedding at a nearby banquet hall, first collaborating with those sounds, then making that background beat truly disappear as his own synthesized composition took center stage. Through his skillful use and knowledge of sound, Roden was able to successfully transport the audiences to a place outside the confines of the Downtown Santa Ana location, to a space of “elsewhere” that was unique to each of the 108 individuals experiencing this live performance.

We were also able to record video documenting some of the sound check with the artist during the afternoon set-up, so we thought you might enjoy it as well.

Santa Ana Sites #5 presents an evening of sound performance by artist Steve Roden. Performing through the use of two analog modular synthesizers, Roden will continue the Sites approach of presenting work in unique Santa Ana spaces, activating a subterranean racket ball court located in the heart of Downtown Santa Ana.

Steve Roden is a visual and sound artist born in Los Angeles and living in Pasadena, CA. Roden’s practice includes painting, drawing, sculpture, writing, film/video and sound performance.

Since the late 1980’s, Roden has had numerous solo and group exhibitions internationally. recent solo exhibitions include: CRG Gallery, New York and Susanne Vielmetter LA Projects, Los Angeles. Group exhibitions include Silence at the Menil Collection, Houston, Texas and the First International Biennial of Contemporary Art of Cartagena, De Indias, Colombia.

Roden has performed his soundworks at various arts spaces and experimental music festivals worldwide including: Serpentine Gallery, London; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; DCA, Dundee, Scotland; Redcat, Los Angeles; Crawford Gallery, Cork, Ireland; as well as performance tours of Brazil and Japan. Recent performances include John Cage’s Cartridge Music with composer Mark Trayle at the Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena; a tribute to Rolf Julius at the Hamburger Banhof, Berlin; and performances at the Museum of Art, Strasbourg, France and The Rothko Chapel, Houston, Texas. Since 1993, Roden has released numerous cds under his own name as well as under the moniker “in between noise” on various record labels internationally.

Recently the artist has created numerous site-specific sound works for spaces such as MOCA at the Pacific Design Center in response to a group of paintings by Mark Rothko; the Henry Art Gallery at the University of Washington’s James Turrell Skyspace; the MAK Center for Art and Architecture/Schindler House in Los Angeles; a live collaboration with Stephen Vitiello in a room of 50 pieces of sculpture by Donald Judd at Chinati, Merfa, Texas; Daniel Libeskind’s Run Run Shaw new creative media centre building at City University of Hong Kong; a sound/sculpture/drawing installation for Thomas U. Walter’s 1848 building at Girard College, Philadelphia for the Hidden City Festival; and a permanent public artwork at Hayvenhurst Park, in West Hollywood, California.

This event is anticipated to be at maximum capacity with reservations required.

We would like to thank everyone who has participated in programming over the past week here at Grand Central Art Center. It has provided another active schedule of diverse programming and wide range of visitors.

Last Thursday, Mat Gleason from Coagula (both the magazine and gallery) stopped by to see the exhibitions and chat a bit. We had the opportunity to talk about Tony de los Reyes, Constantin Hartenstein and Erin Morrison‘s work and the upcoming programming, before the conversation shifted to Angels baseball. Mat is one of the Angels number one fans, he actually pens for http://www.halosheaven.com/, but we won’t reveal his moniker, you’ll have to guess. The talk of baseball led to a great conversation about Adam Moser‘s residency/project this summer at GCAC, The Cut-Off Men. We honored Mat by presenting him with one of the team autographed, limited edition, baseballs from the project. Now if Mat would just stand still for one moment, we could get an in-focus picture…

Friday afternoon, artist in residence Brent Green and his collaborators, Mike McGinley, Jacquelyn Gordon, Tim Rutili, Tim Hurley and Jim Skuldt, met up at the Orange County School of the Arts, Margaret A. Webb Theatre. They spent much of the afternoon doing set-up and sound checks with the amazing OCSA team and volunteer students for that evenings screening with live soundtrack performance of Green’s feature film Gravity Was Everywhere Back Then. The venue is top notch and the sound quality was fantastic! After the sound check and a few warm-up runs, we headed down for a wonderful, pre-screening/performance, Mexican food dinner in downtown Santa Ana.

Following the early dinner, it was time to head back to the theatre for the performance. There was a great audience who experienced a performance that was truly emotional, reflective and inspiring. It was a very moving evening of live music soundtrack and powerful film. Thank you Brent and your collaborators for creating such powerful art! Our sincere gratitude to the team at the Orange County School for the Arts, especially Aaron Orullian, Patrick Williams, Eric Hamme, Kevin Cook, Cathy Michaels. We are looking forward to future collaborations with your team, faculty and students!

The working week started of Monday with a visit from Orange County Museum of Art Chief Curator Dan Cameron. We invited Dan down to speak with students enrolled in the Exhibition and Design program at Cal State University Fullerton. Dan shared stories of how he began his career in the curating practice, his early travels to Spain that so inspired him, and his early writing on the topic of art. He talked about past projects, including his time at the New Museum, curating the 2003 Istanbul Biennale and the development of Prospect 1 in New Orleans. The students asked great questions and the conversation was lively. Thank you Dan for the time, energy and inspiration you provided to our students.

Monday evening, we partnered with OC Food Access Coalition, Positively Delicious OC and Memphis at the Santora to present a screening of the film In Organic We Trust. We had the great fortune to work with two wonderful individuals through this collaboration, OC Food Access Coalition Executive Director Gillian Poe and Program Coordinator Mire Molnar-Barton. We had an engaged crowd on hand that had the opportunity to talk with numerous organizations that set-up booths in our lobby, take in the tasty treats provided by Memphis, and enjoy the screening of the film. Following the film, the audience was provided the opportunity of a Q&A with the films Director/Producer Kip Pastor. It was an educational exchange that lasted close to an hour, with quality information provided by both the filmmaker and audience.

This afternoon, we were visited by Jose Quant and Shell Martin of the Q Art Salon, one of our great gallery neighbors here in Downtown Santa Ana. Jose and Shell brought Ruben Dario of Teatro Nacional Ruben Dario, Managua, Nicaragua, for a site visit to GCAC and conversation about cultural exchange possibilities. Lots of ideas and energy, so we will keep you posted as things develop.

Naida Osline: All the Queen’s Men presents two separate, but
related, bodies of photo-based work from the artist’s residency
at Grand Central Art Center from November 2011 through
January 2012.

The two series consists of formal portraits of subjects who are
photographed in the studio against a neutral backdrop, mostly
members of the Santa Ana community. One series models are
middle-aged men; the other of women and men dressed in drag.
Each series bring up ideas about identity, power, representation,
gender, fame, beauty, aging and fashion.

Millard Sheets Studio: The Art of Home Savings & Loan

Millard Sheets: The Art of Home Savings & Loan creates a renewed
awareness of the Home Savings & Loan mosaic murals located
throughout Southern California, originally designed by the Millard
Sheets Studio. Included in the exhibition are images of the mosaics,
original works of art, sketches, supporting documentation and
images of the restoration process of the Rolling Hills Estates mural.
The exhibition focuses on five of the mosaic murals located in the
communities of Temple City, Rolling Hills Estates, Anaheim, Pomona
and Santa Ana.

PANEL DISCUSSION: Sunday, May 6th, 2012 at 2pm
Panel will primarily address the Millard Sheets Studio, which included
Millard Sheets, SueHertel, Denis O’Connor, and others who contributed
to the Home Savings & Loan project.

Confirmed participants include: Dr. Adam Arenson – Assistant Professor
of History at the University of Texas, El Paso. Is currently completing
research for abookon the art and architecture of Home Savings & Loan.
Alan Hess – Architecture critic and historian, with a particular emphasis
on mid century modernism. Mike McGee – Gallery Director of the
Begovich Gallery, Professor and ProgramDirector of Exhibition Design
and Museum Studies at California State University, Fullerton.

Camilla Taylor: The Disagreement

Comprised of two-dimensional and three-dimensional prints, generated
through relief printing, Camilla Taylor’s work explores the concepts of
narrative, repetition and what has been referred to as “otherness.”
The artist references the capacity people have to project onto, or
empathize, with objects that have similarities to humans.

Meet Jules Rochielle, our current GCAC Artist in Residence, and
engage with her project What is Democracy?. Jules will continue to be in
residence through the end of May, then return in the fall for the second
part of her residency.

May 2nd- May 5th: Jules Rochielle has invited artist Carmen Montoya
for a short residency here at GCAC, in hopes of running a set of
community art making workshops. Carmen has been actively engaged
with a group known as Pineros y Camesinos Unidos del Noroeste
(Northwest Treeplanters and Farmworkers United), which is Oregon’s
union of farmworkers, nursery, and reforestation workers, and Oregon’s
largest Latino organization.Jules will work with Carmen and the community
to create a set of powerful images to take back to the Pineros y
Campesinos Unidos del Noroeste.
